By outward appearances, a local industrial manufacturer and a local nonprofit organization might not seem to have much in common, but fulfilling the American Dream of homeownership unites Eaton Corp. and Habitat for Humanity.

Eaton's Sumter-based operation actually has a longstanding relationship with Sumter Habitat for Humanity, and everyone was all smiles Tuesday - almost through their masks - as plant representatives extended an $85,000 grant for a full home build to the local housing organization.

Habitat's mission is to provide affordable housing to low-income families who qualify in areas it serves, and the City of Sumter has had an affiliate since 1987.

​

During that time period, Sumter Habitat has built 126 homes for Sumterites who meet the qualifications, according to Executive Director Theresa White, and Eaton's grant will sponsor site construction of No. 127, scheduled for the fall.
