"The skills I've learned through this experience are invaluable and I'm blessed to have had the opportunity to build my home with the volunteers, my future neighbors, and my Sumter Habitat family. I'm so thankful for those who helped support me through this journey."
In April we had the enormous pleasure to dedicate our 120th Sumter Habitat home and celebrate Nadean and Malik's next journey in life. Friends, family, and Nadean's new neighbors all gathered to bless this new home and join in joy. We are so excited for Nadean and Malik to move into their forever home!
Nadean began our Affordable Homeownership program with little to call her own. She and her son Malik have never lived on their own. In fact, the single mother has been fortunate enough to live with her family. But that blessing comes at a cost: her independence.
“As a potential homeowner for Habitat for Humanity, I greatly greet you with joy. I am a single parent, preparing our lives for a home of our own. Habitat has been one of the experiences that has had the greatest impact in our lives. I am honored to be part of a Christian foundation. One of the requirements for home ownership is sweat equity. It allows you to help build your home from the ground up. I love the fact that friends, volunteers, and family come together in unity. Working as one brings memories and knowledge of a carpenter. Through every effort and sweat, there is evidence of love. I am honored to be building a future and home with the helping hands of Habitat for Humanity.”
Her appreciation and awe is especially evident when she’s participating, alongside volunteers, on the construction of her home. She thanks them all the time and has been known to say, “Do you hear that? Through the hammering of nails and each part of my home being built piece by piece, YOU are ringing the bells to my future.” The future for Nadean is looking brighter than ever.
