Planned Giving
Many loyal donors support Sumter Habitat for Humanity's mission of giving a hand up to hardworking families in need of simple, decent and affordable housing. Many of these donors make a planned gift, because they care deeply about the ministry and want to do something special to support it. Quite simply, they want to leave a legacy to show that their life mattered.
There are many ways to make a planned gift to Sumter Habitat for Humanity.
Bequest
Bequests can be for any amount and are revocable if donors need the assets later. Donors retain full use of the assets during life, and their estates can realize a significant tax savings.
Qualified Retirement Plan Benefits
Qualified retirement plan benefits are income in respect of a decedent (IRD). This is income that a decedent was entitled to but was not properly included on his/her final income tax return during the year of death. Directing IRD to Sumter Habitat for Humanity can save donors substantial income-tax liability.
Charitable Gift Annuity
Charitable annuities provide steady lifetime income for the donor. These are contracts under which a charity agrees to pay a fixed amount of money to one or two individuals for their lifetime in return for a transfer of cash, marketable securities or other assets.
Life Insurance Policy
Donors may purchase a life insurance policy and name Sumter Habitat for Humanity as their beneficiary. They then will receive a charitable gift deduction for each premium payment.
Charitable Remainder Trust
Charitable remainder trusts allow donors to designate a gift to Sumter Habitat for Humanity today while retaining an attractive income during their lifetime. These gifts may be deducted from their federal income tax.
Charitable Lead Trust
The charitable lead trust is a mirror image of the charitable remainder trust in that the income or "lead interest" is paid to Sumter Habitat for Humanity and the remainder interest passes to non-charitable beneficiaries of the donor's choice, usually family members, or it reverts to the donor.
