Construction Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to attend an orientation in order to build?
We offer an orientation for new volunteers once a quarter beginning in March, 2008. This orientation is not
mandatory in order to volunteer, but is helpful to your overall Habitat for Humanity experience!
Am I old enough to build?
Volunteers ages 16 and 17 are welcome to build with us and are asked to bring a liability waiver signed by a
parent or legal guardian on their first build day. We require the young volunteer to be accompanied by an adult 25
years of age or older for the first 3 builds. If after the first three builds this young adult is confident and
committed he/she is allowed to come on their own. No one under 16 is allowed on a construction site for any
reason due to insurance regulations.
Can I come for a half day?
Individual Volunteers and Groups are encouraged to stay for a full build day which is generally from 8:00 a.m.–
4:00 p.m. Exceptions will be made for certain volunteers and volunteer groups. If you need to work a half day,
you must clear this first with the Construction Director. In general, individual volunteers who want to work a half
day must come in the morning so they can hear the safety briefing. If you are a first time volunteer you must stay
for a full day.
Do you ever turn volunteers away?
We can only hold a maximum number of volunteers depending on how many homes we have under construction
and the current stage of the homes . Once we meet our maximum walk-on volunteers or groups who bring more
people than they scheduled will be turned away. A full site is a liability and it is often boring for volunteers
because there is not enough work for everyone. Please make sure you check our construction calendar to see
how many volunteers we need on a given day.
When can I start recruiting for volunteers from my group?
Once you receive a confirmation email you have officially been given a build day and you can open this up to
your volunteers.
I've built with Sumter Habitat before. Do I still need to fill out a liability form?
Volunteers need to fill out a liability form the first time they work for Habitat. We will keep your liability form
on file, however, we may occasionally ask you to resign one to update our files.
Do you take walk-on's?
We strongly discourage you from doing this. We will only let you on site if the site is not currently full. To avoid
this, please either signup online (Coming Soon) or through the Construction Director.
What do I need to bring with me to the worksite?
Sumter Habitat for Humanity does have all of the necessary tools and building materials that are needed each day
for construction. However, we do encourage you to bring your own hammers, tape measures, tool belts, etc. if
you would like. Please make sure your items are clearly marked with your name in case they are misplaced. You
are also encouraged to wear solid toed shoes and other clothes that you are comfortable in and will not mind
getting dirty. Please, no "flip flops" or opened toed shoes, please!
Will lunch be provided?
Unless otherwise stipulated, Habitat does not generally provide lunches for our workers. Exceptions to this will
be during special blitz builds or Collegiate Challenge. Otherwise, we encourage you to bring your own sack
lunch, or you can visit a nearby fast food location during the lunch break (several are located within minutes of
our worksite). Habitat does provide you with water, ice and cups.
Where is the Habitat Worksite Located?
Sumter Habitat for Humanity is currently building in our "Fuller Gardens" Subdivision that is located at the
intersection of East Red Bay and Boulevard Roads in Sumter. We have a total of 54 lots in Fuller Gardens and
expect to be building there for the next few years.
