We're thankful for so many wonderful things, especially our dedicated #volunteers! Meet Mike, one of our extraordinary construction volunteers who is always willing to help where he can.
Tell us about yourself:
"I grew up in Northwest Iowa. Spent 22 years as a United States Air Force attorney. We retired locally and made South Carolina our home. Something that was on my wife and my hearts for years was the desire to foster children. In fact, that was the reason I retired early from the Air Force, so we could have the opportunity to foster. We have two children of our own who are grown and who are helping making the world a better place in their own ways."
What do you do for fun?
"Most of my time is spent with my number one, my beautiful wife. I like to ride my motorcycles, go boating, and camping. I also feel very strongly about volunteering and helping with disaster relief aid when I can."
How did you become involved with Habitat for Humanity?
"I was looking for a place that I could volunteer where I would really be respected and used. I found Sumter Habitat online and it was a really good fit. I've been volunteering with Habitat for a little over a year and a half and try to come out to the site at least twice a week."
"I enjoy the work and meeting so many people. It's fun being able to work with a new group of folks every week. Its a really great learning opportunity and its amazing being able to learn these skills and help out at the same time."
What is it like to be a volunteer here?
"Just do it. Don't be looking for the opportunities, just jump in! I didn't have any experience going in but it turned out okay for me. Its a great experience working with Habitat and the families they serve."
Thank you Mike! We love you and appreciate all of your hard work!
