"Happiness is contagious. Be a carrier."
We love to highlight our #volunteers because we know how special they truly are. If anyone embodies the quote above, it's Kimberlie. In her last few weeks in the community, there were so many things she could've spent her time on and she chose volunteering with Sumter Habitat ReStore. She chose to give us that time, and allowed us to benefit exponentially from her kindness, compassion, and dedicated work ethic. Kim embodies the resourcefulness, creativity, and ethical and professional responsibility that one would expect in a dedicated service member. Kim and others like her are why we are so blessed to have Shaw Air Force Base in our community.

Tell us a little about yourself:
"I'm an aircraft maintenance officer in the Air Force. I just recently got engaged. I love animals and love to go to concerts."
What are some of your hobbies?
"Rock climbing and bowling are a few of my favorites."
What does HOME mean to you?
"Home is somewhere you can feel safe. It's yours - you're comfortable being the real you."
How did you get involved with Sumter Habitat?
"When I was fourteen, I started volunteering with the Salkehatchie Summer Service through the United Methodist Summer Program. Each summer for six years I would spend a week helping renovate homes for families in need. Now that I'm grown, I don't have that flexibility with my schedule but, I still want to help people in need. I knew about Habitat for Humanity because I volunteered on the construction site once last year with my squadron and I was familiar with the Sumter Habitat ReStore."
Why Habitat for Humanity?
"The flexibility is a huge factor for me. It was my #1 stop because I already knew about Sumter Habitat and love the work that they do. Additionally, when I reached out to other local organizations, Sumter Habitat was the first and one of the only to respond. I definitely feel valued and wanted when I volunteer here."
What is it like to be a volunteer with Sumter Habitat? Any advice for those looking to volunteer?
"Fulfilling. I like hands-on projects. At the ReStore, I can do something of value even in a short amount of time. Advice for people looking to volunteer? Just do it. You'll keep active and your mind engaged, you'll network with a lot of people, and come out a more well-rounded person. Your volunteer hours and the connections that you make with those you serve with can actually help you better yourself too. So seriously, don't hold yourself back from it!"
Wow! It's so amazing to hear how just one person can make such a difference by being committed to helping other. Thank you Kimberlie for always coming out willing to learn and share your passion with all of us. Its been great to have you in the ReStore and we're sad to see you go. We know the Habitat where you are moving to will be lucky to have you! We love you!
