Did you know that April is Volunteer Appreciation month?! We love to show off our #volunteers because we know how special they truly are. One of our newest and "ALL IN" volunteers is Kayla. When we say "ALL IN", we sure do mean it!
Kayla came to us in a way that is pretty unique. While pulling an all-nighter (a college student's typical routine) and researching DIY projects, she found Sumter Habitat for Humanity's website. When she saw opportunities to volunteer with Sumter Habitat, she signed up to volunteer that very day. Her passion and creativity have really made her an asset to our Habitat Family.
Hometown: Sumter, South Carolina
Tell us a little about yourself:
"I'm a college student studying Accounting and Management right now. I plan to go to USC in the fall. I love animals and have four dogs. I used to study linguistics and have a great interest in language and grammar."
What are some of your hobbies?
"I love graphic design and finding new projects. I love learning and am always trying new things. I like to bake and spoil my friends. Every spring break my family takes a week-long trip to the beach and it's one of my favorite times of the year. I enjoy exploring and spending time with those I love!"
What does HOME mean to you?
"Home means snuggling my dogs while avoiding homework. ?"
How did you get involved with Sumter Habitat?
"I was researching "home DIYs" at 2 AM and a website referred me to the Sumter Habitat for Humanity site. I saw the "volunteer today" button and signed up to volunteer with the ReStore that very same day. I've also had the chance to volunteer on the build site a few times and now I get the change to put my love of graphic design into practice by helping the administrative team with special projects. It's really been such a blast!"
Why Habitat for Humanity?
"I get to learn new construction skills that I will be able to utilize in my future. I get to have a lot of fun building and helping create new marketing materials. In fact, I even got to help design the new house signs for this year's 2 new Habitat houses. It's a really awesome experience."
What is it like to be a volunteer with Sumter Habitat? Any advice for those looking to volunteer?
"Sumter Habitat is such an exciting atmosphere where there are always new tasks to tackle every time I come to volunteer. I get to meet so many new people and learn their stories. It's a great opportunity to give back and learn at the same time."
"For anyone thinking about volunteering, no matter where you want to do it, just dive in. Just start one day and you'll definitely love it. With Sumter Habitat, there are so many different things you can do to help out that it's impossible to get bored. You're going to have so much fun that before you know it, 150 hours have passed and it doesn't even feel like it. Come join the fun!"
Wow! It's so amazing to hear how just one person can make such a difference at Sumter Habitat. Thank you Kayla for always coming out willing to learn and share your passion with us. Its been great to have you in the ReStore, on the build site, AND in our administrative office. We love you!
