You might have noticed we love to share the stories of where our homeowners have come from and what they continue to accomplish. But these Habitat homes have touched more than just the parents' lives. We're excited to continue our "Habitat Kids" segment! For Alexus, Habitat not only afforded her family the opportunity to have a safe and healthy home, it also gave her the chance to grow as an individual.
We love our Habitat Kids and your support allows us to help more kids chase their wild and wonderful dreams! Below, Alexus shares what Habitat means to her.
I remember turning onto Habitat Drive for the very first time. My mom stopped abruptly in front of this slab of pavement and said, ‘This is it!’ My siblings and I responded, ‘This is what?’ while laughing hysterically, thinking she had lost her mind. She then explained that, that would be the place our new home would be built. That’s when it hit me – that‘s when I realized we had a place we could call ours forever.
Because of Sumter Habitat, I was able to attend Lemira Elementary and join the Lemira Percussion Ensemble, realizing my love for music. Running off my passion for music, I continued my journey with band throughout high school which in turn taught me discipline, self-reliance, and a sense of responsibility. It’s kind of amazing how life works because I was able to use those same skills and applied them to my studies at the University of South Carolina!
All throughout my journey, one thing remained constant -- my love for Habitat for Humanity. I believe in the work we do, and as Habitat Kid transformed into a Habitat Employee, I am ready and willing to share my story and serve others any way I possibly can.
Thank you Alexus for sharing your #habitat story and how the journey made you into the young lady you are today! We're so happy to have you as part of our team! You can help us build more dreams for Habitat Kids just like Alexus by giving a gift today!
