We had a great time last week with the students from Brock University as they helped us kickoff our 2020 Collegiate Challenge! Although the weather was a little uncooperative, we didn't let that stop us! The students really got to work helping to build homes, community, and hope. They also got the chance to learn a little about the Sumter community! Head on over to our Facebook page, Sumter Habitat for Humanity (@HabitatSumter) to see all the wonderful pictures!
Fall is here and it's time to get involved! Mark your calendars - here is what's going on with Sumter Habitat for Humanity in the coming months:
November 1st - Dowtown Sip n' Scream
We hope to see you there, enjoying any and all of the cool weather that comes our way!
During the summer, most high schoolers are traveling or spending time with friends. But Madison Floyd chose to give her time and energy volunteering with Habitat! She always had a smile and an enthusiasm to work - and a knowledge of technology. In her brief time with us here in the heat of June and July, she showed us the meaning of home and discovered a second family.
Hometown: Sumter, SC
Volunteer As: Administration
What do you do when you're not volunteering?
When I'm not volunteering, I paint, read, and babysit my younger siblings for my mother.
What are some of your hobbies?
My hobbies include painting, reading, using various forms of medium to create artwork, and photography.
What does home mean to you?
Home to me is my family. It's my littlest sister chasing our cat around while my mother bakes bread and sings in the kitchen. It's my younger sister zoning out while watching TV and the rest of us laughing at her. It's us working together. It's the bickering that goes on between us and the laughter that ensues soon after. It's all of our quirks that make us such a well-rounded family.
How and why did you become involved with Habitat for Humanity?
I found out about Habitat for Humanity online and I went to my mom and said that I would like to try it. She agreed that volunteer work would be a good experience for me and so we went to Habitat as soon as possible, and I'm so glad we did!
What keeps you at Habitat for Humanity? What would you say to anybody looking to volunteer here?
The people at Habitat for Humanity are not just employees and volunteers, they are a family and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to become a part of that family for this seemingly short summer.
